Food photography that makes you HUNGRY!

With the exception of a few editorial style photos that I’ve done, the majority of my work has a strong commercial feel. The hero is the food or drink and the crop is fairly tight on the subject. The biggest goal of commercial food photography is to get the customer interested in buying the food or drink. This is achieved by exceptional food styling and photographic lighting!

Take, for example, the photo I posted of the turkey sandwich. Let’s break down the photo. What makes this photo of the sandwich successful are the folds and layering of the turkey slices. Had these turkey slices just been plopped down flat, you would lose the 3-D dimension feel and the sandwich would look squashed. The way the light rakes across the deli slices also contributes to the success of the photo. What about the lettuce? Notice how crispy it looks?! The most intricate detail in this photo is the mayo dripping down underneath the bread. Drips really get stomachs rumbling.
